Abstract

The Chapter of Hajj is among chapters of the Qur’an about which there are divergent opinions on the place of their revelation. As a matter of fact, it attracts more intense disagreement than other chapters. Therefore, this research seeks to provide a detailed classification of the chapter regarding its place of revelation whether Makkah or Madinah. This shall be achieved through the inductive and analytical methods. On one hand, submissions of scholars from the second to the fourteenth years of Hijrah shall be gathered, while, one the other hand, factors that led to their disagreement shall be analyzed by studying different reports related to the reasons behind revelation. Equally, a comparative method shall be employed to compare between the evidences advanced in support of the two opposing claims regarding the revelation of the chapter in Madinah and/or in Makkah. This shall enable us to determine the actual period during which the chapter was revealed. In addition, the general context of the chapter shall be studied, while the thematic agreement and its relationship with the chapter shall be elucidated. Through this method, it shall be possible to achieve a precise unambiguous preponderance. In the end, the research finds that the chapter was revealed in Makkah, though it also contains some verses revealed in Madinah. The researcher recommends that there should be further studies on other chapters like al-Ra’d, al-Rahman, al-Saff, al-Taghabun, and al-Mutaffifin with similar disagreement over the place of their revelation, using the same method.
