Literature reflects both human emotions and the natural world, offering a profound understanding of the relationship between humanity and nature. Tirukkural, a timeless classic authored by Tiruvalluvar, treats nature not as a mere backdrop, but as an essential and inseparable component of virtuous living. Rooted in the principles of Deep Ecology, this article explores how Tirukkural elevates the sanctity of nature and highlights the necessity for humans to live harmoniously with all forms of life. By examining the natural thoughts embedded within various chapters of Tirukkural through the critical framework of Deep Ecology Theory, this study emphasizes the intrinsic value of nature, independent of human utility. It also sheds light on the ecological ethics subtly conveyed by Tiruvalluvar, encouraging a deeper ecological consciousness and a moral responsibility towards environmental preservation in contemporary society.
